According to local villagers, the couple lives in extreme poverty, barely making a living by raising chickens and farming, and had resided in the now-demolished house for over two decades. Two days prior, the local authorities classified their home as an illegal structure under the pretext of fulfilling the “National Civilized City Creation Work Requirements.” On-site video footage shows that as the elderly couple faced the destruction of their home, a government official still told them to “trust the government.”
