Zhengzhou, Henan: Depositors of Rural Banks Launch Another Protest (June 20, 2025)
On June 20, around 50 depositors affected by the Henan rural bank scandal broke through heavy blockades imposed by Chinese authorities and held another protest at Ruyi Lake in Zhengzhou, demanding the return of their frozen savings.
The crisis began on April 18, 2022, when four rural banks in Henan—Yuzhou Xinminsheng Village Bank, Shangcai Huimin Village Bank, Zhecheng Huanghuai Village Bank, and Kaifeng Xindongfang Village Bank—suddenly and without warning suspended all online withdrawals and transfers. The move froze over 40 billion yuan (approximately 5.5 billion USD) in deposits, affecting more than 600,000 account holders.
Over the past three years, depositors have staged dozens of protests in efforts to reclaim their funds. During this period, many were detained, beaten, or even sentenced to long prison terms on questionable charges by Chinese police.
Although most depositors have still not recovered their money and participation in protests has dwindled, those who continue to speak out say:
“Whether we get our money back is one thing. But refusing to give up—that’s a kind of dignity. And it’s not about begging or putting on a show of tears.”
