“Shanghai on High Alert Ahead of White Paper Movement Anniversary; Man Detained for Raising Flag on the Bund (2025.11.24)”
On November 24, on the eve of the third anniversary of the “White Paper Movement,” an absurd scene once again unfolded on Shanghai’s Bund. A man who planned to travel around China by motorcycle arrived in Shanghai that day and went to the Peace Hotel on the Bund to take a photo. However, just as he pulled a flag from his backpack to take a picture, two plainclothes officers suddenly rushed forward and snatched it at lightning speed — he didn’t even have time to raise it. It was later confirmed that the flag contained no so-called “subversive” content. Nevertheless, the man was still required to cooperate with police for questioning before being allowed to leave.
Such misunderstandings caused by overly nervous police are not new on the Bund. Earlier this year, on August 22, a street vendor selling old-style ice pops on the Bund was even mistaken for a “bomber” and taken away. Some netizens commented that on today’s Bund, you simply don’t know who the real tourists are.
In late November three years ago, the “White Paper Movement” broke out across many Chinese cities, and Shanghai was one of the core locations.
