On the afternoon of July 25, hundreds of workers from Yixin Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. in Luoyuan County, Fuzhou, Fujian Province, blocked a national highway to protest the company’s disguised layoffs and unpaid social insurance contributions. They remained in a standoff with large numbers of police officers and special police until the early hours of the following morning.
According to workers, Yixin Iron and Steel changed its legal representative the previous month. The new legal representative had promised that the company was “only changing its legal representative” and that employees would continue working as usual. However, on July 25, the company abruptly announced a production shutdown, required employees to take turns remaining on duty, and offered them only 1,000 yuan per month as a living allowance. The decision sparked strong anger among workers, who immediately launched a collective protest.
In the early hours of July 26, the workers gradually dispersed after the company announced that it would withdraw the production-suspension and renovation notice, make up overdue medical and social insurance contributions, and publish a specific compensation plan by the following Friday.
