Datong Students and Netizens Rally to Support Girl in “Sausage Incident” (Nov 2–3, 2025)
On November 3, in Datong City, Shanxi Province, large numbers of students and netizens gathered outside Datong No. 4 High School to take photos and “check in,” showing support for a female student whose keys were reportedly confiscated by the vice principal after she bought a grilled sausage.
According to reports, on November 1, a female student at Datong No. 4 High School bought a grilled sausage from a food stall outside the school gate, but was stopped by a staff member—believed to be the vice principal—who forcibly took away her electric bike keys and house keys. In a video widely circulated online, the girl can be seen emotionally crying out, “Give it back! Give it back to me!” after the man seized her keys.
The incident quickly sparked widespread sympathy and outrage online. Many netizens questioned, “Is buying a sausage now a crime?” Others commented that the school’s actions appeared aimed at monopolizing food sales and forcing students to eat only in the school cafeteria.
As public criticism mounted, Datong No. 4 High School responded that the “online video was exaggerated,” a statement that further fueled anger among students and netizens. From the evening of November 2 through November 3, groups of students and online users continued to visit the school gate, buying grilled sausages, taking photos, and posting them online to protest what they called the school’s heavy-handed behavior and to show solidarity with the girl.
On the evening of November 3, a woman believed to be a school staff member appeared at the scene and attempted to disperse those gathered in support. The incident continues to draw public attention and remains under discussion.
