To welcome the passing deities, villagers ignite mountainous piles of firecrackers and fireworks, engulfing the streets in thick smoke and deafening blasts. The scene is as staggering as a “battlefield”—a ritual used by locals to pray for a life that is “red and booming” (prosperous).
