In recent weeks, angered by the “Wangwang incident” and the authorities’ crackdown on related solidarity efforts, growing numbers of netizens have withdrawn their organ donation pledges through the Red Cross Society of China as a form of protest. They wrote: “If you won’t hear my voice, don’t call on me to give”; “Once there’s a law against animal cruelty, then we can talk about there being love in this world”; “Without legislation against animal cruelty, I’ve lost hope in this society — I don’t see the point of donating. People shouldn’t be allowed to bully other animals just because they hold the weapons”; “I’m afraid that after I die, my kindness will flow to beasts. From now on I refuse all donations, whether organs or money.”
