“Xi’an Residents’ Boycott of SEG Continues for Two Months, Foot Traffic Drops 70% (2026.08.08–31)”

As of August 31, the “Boycott SEG” campaign launched by residents of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, has continued for a full two months. In an effort to win back customers, SEG has reportedly invested hundreds of millions of yuan and repeatedly rolled out large-scale promotions and discounts, yet foot traffic at the shopping mall remains sharply down. According to multiple local residents, current foot traffic at SEG has fallen by at least 70% compared with peak levels. Even on weekends and public holidays, the once-packed mall is now noticeably less crowded. The prolonged decline in customer traffic is also putting enormous pressure on businesses inside the mall. Some merchants say their sales have dropped sharply and that they are “struggling to hold on.” Two months on, the “Boycott SEG” campaign has not quickly faded away like many similar protests. Instead, it has persisted to this day, making it a rare example in China in recent years of a sustained collective consumer boycott.
