On July 10, in Jiangnan District of Nanning, Guangxi, employees of Renrenle Supermarket gathered with banners in front of the store to protest against the state-owned enterprise Qujiang Cultural Investment and its subsidiary Renrenle Supermarket for failing to pay social insurance and abandoning workers. According to employees, in order to “maintain its listing status,” Qujiang Cultural Investment sold 13 subsidiaries of Renrenle to shell companies for just 1 yuan each. After the transfer, only executive salaries were guaranteed, while ordinary workers faced long-term wage arrears and unpaid social insurance.
From July 12 to 14, in the Wuli Industrial Park of Lingshan County, Qinzhou, Guangxi, the boss of Qiangliang Plywood Factory, who had long delayed paying workers’ wages, was confronted by dozens of workers. After repeated failed attempts to claim their pay, the workers trapped the boss in his office and even barred him from using the restroom.
In Wangjiatai Village, Miaotou Town, Hanchuan City, Xiaogan, Hubei Province, the village party secretary, Wang Weichi, embezzled the funds that were meant to pay for villagers’ rural cooperative medical insurance. As a result, a villager who suffered a sudden stroke was turned away by the hospital due to being unable to pay for treatment. On July 13, villagers pushed the patient to the entrance of the village committee office to demand an explanation.
On July 11, in Yuelu District, Changsha, Hunan Province, outside Meixi Lake Primary School, the mother of Yu Chen—the 9-year-old girl whose skull was fractured by a teacher—protested the court’s ruling and spoke out to passersby about her daughter’s suffering and the injustice of the verdict.
On the afternoon of September 6, 2023, during an after-school session at Meixi Lake Primary School, 9-year-old fourth-grade student Yu Chen was struck on the forehead with a triangle ruler by male teacher Song Mouming. The blow caused a comminuted skull fracture with foreign objects embedded in her brain. A five-hour craniotomy was required to remove bone fragments and debris.
On November 27, 2024, the People’s Court of Yuelu District in Changsha found Song Mouming guilty of intentional injury and sentenced him to five years in prison. He was also banned from working in positions involving close contact with minors. The court rejected the civil compensation claim.
On April 10, 2025, the Changsha Intermediate People’s Court upheld the original verdict, dismissing appeals from both parties.
According to Yu Chen’s mother, the girl is still recovering at home. She suffers from significant aftereffects including insomnia, memory loss, and emotional instability, and must rely on medication to fall asleep.
On July 12, in Ningyuan County, Yongzhou, Hunan Province, two female students working summer jobs were sheltering from the rain at the entrance of a Taizi Furniture store when the store owner accused them of blocking a recruitment advertisement and proceeded to assault them with a weapon. After the incident, several eyewitnesses and the girls’ employers gathered at the store entrance to demand an explanation on their behalf.
On July 12, in Changzhen Community, Yutang Subdistrict, Guangming District, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, labor recruiters falsely advertised job opportunities and brought hundreds of people to apply at Amphenol Precision Connector Company. However, the company only hired a few dozen workers, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. In protest, the workers blocked the entrance to Amphenol. They gradually dispersed after the recruiters compensated each worker with 200 yuan.
On July 11, at the Diandian Plaza construction site in the High-Tech Zone of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, a violent clash broke out between construction workers and security guards. Workers sprayed fire extinguishers at the guards and struck one guard to the ground with a shovel. According to eyewitnesses, the incident was triggered by the site owner hiring security personnel to forcibly remove the workers without having paid their wages.
On the evening of July 11, due to long-standing unresolved issues with water and electricity supply, residents of Yiyuan Community in Bazhou, Hebei, blocked the Bazhou municipal government building.
On July 12, at Hongfeng Market in Wansheng, Chongqing, an elderly person came to sell a few handwoven bamboo baskets. A market administrator stopped the elderly vendor and demanded a fee. Bystanders, upset by the situation, got into an argument with the administrator.
On July 10, the strike at Nuosha Garment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Fuzhou, Jiangxi had already lasted for a week. In the early hours of that day, the company owner attempted to secretly move out equipment but was caught by the workers and failed.
