On April 16, over a hundred rural bank depositors from across the country gathered once again outside the headquarters of Zhengzhou Bank, located in Jinshui District, Zhengzhou, Henan, demanding the return of their savings. Nearly four years ago, on July 10, 2022, depositors staging a similar protest at the same location were set upon by a large mob of plainclothes thugs dispatched by the Chinese Communist Party. The crisis began in April 2022, when multiple rural banks in Henan, Anhui, and other provinces abruptly shut down their online withdrawal services, illegally freezing tens of billions of yuan belonging to tens of thousands of depositors. In the years since, depositors have mounted countless campaigns to defend their rights, but to little avail — many have faced prolonged surveillance, harassment, and detention at the hands of the authorities.
