On June 1, a Chinese self-driving convoy was stopped and harassed by local police after entering Kyrgyzstan, with officers threatening to revoke their licenses. However, when one member of the group produced a U.S. passport, the officers’ demeanor shifted immediately — visibly flustered, they ultimately waved the entire convoy through. Kyrgyzstan is one of the earliest countries to have embraced the Belt and Road Initiative and holds a pivotal position in China’s Central Asian strategic framework. Yet in the eyes of ordinary Kyrgyz people, China commands far less respect than the United States.
