On July 25, villagers near Gate No. 2 of the Wumeng Grassland Scenic Area in Panzhou, Liupanshui, Guizhou Province, blocked traffic to demand that the authorities pay long-overdue compensation for land occupied by the scenic area. Traffic in the area was brought to a standstill for several hours. Police subsequently cracked down on the protesting villagers and arrested several of them.
According to an informed local netizen, the communities surrounding the scenic area are populated mainly by Yi and Bai villagers. Because the scenic area has occupied villagers’ land without paying compensation for years, local residents have repeatedly blocked roads to defend their rights.
