On April 28, CCP mouthpieces including Xinhua and CNR simultaneously republished an article by the Ministry of State Security titled “A Certain Foreign Organization Heavily Funds ‘Lying Flat’ Influencers,” launching a coordinated attack on the “lying flat” phenomenon. Internet users were unconvinced, however, flooding the comments with remarks such as “I don’t want to lie flat either — I want a job at the tobacco bureau, the power authority, the water conservancy department, or the forestry administration” and “I could use some funding too,” turning the campaign into a target of collective mockery.
